Unmoved by the Market: Household Spending vs. Economic Trends

Project Berkeley focuses on understanding the key economic factors influencing household final consumption expenditure in the Philippines. By analyzing various economic indicators, we aim to uncover how shifts in labor, inflation, government spending, and investments affect household spending patterns over time.

Here's a quick overview of our project.

Our project explores how economic factors like inflation, employment, and income influence household consumption. By analyzing trends and data, we aim to provide insights that can help improve economic policies and financial decision-making.

Motivation

Household consumption drives economic growth. Understanding its key influences helps improve financial policies and decision-making.

Problem

Factors like inflation, employment, and income affect spending, but their exact impact remains unclear, making economic planning challenging.

Solution

By analyzing economic data, we uncover trends in household spending, helping policymakers and businesses make informed decisions.

Data Collection

How did we collect our data?

Description of Dataset

The dataset includes statistical indicators across various sectors, covering different time periods, with a range of (2000-2023). The key categories of data include: (1) demographics and labor market (2) national accounts (3) production and prices (4) energy and environment (5) financial and banking indicators (6) external trade and balance of payments (7) social and development indicators. There are approximately 11,000 unique data entries in the overall dataset, without accounting for any missing or incomplete data.

Data Processing

The data will undergo standard data processing procedures such as handling missing values, removing duplicate entries, standardizing formats and units, and handling outliers and inconsistencies if applicable.

Data Modeling

How did we model our data?

Visualization for Modeling

We used Jupyter Notebook to help visualize the relationships within the data. These visualizations helped in identifying patterns, emphasizing trends over time , and confirming the strength and direction of correlations between household final consumption expenditure and key economic indicators.

Master Plot

Nutshell Graph

Despite substantial fluctuations in key economic indicators, household final consumption expenditure (HFCE) in the Philippines has been generally increasing over time. While labor force participation continues to fall and consumer price index stays essentially steady, GDP per capita, gross capital formation, and net factor income from overseas all not only exhibit upward growth but also strong post-2020 recoveries after a dip during the 2019–2020 timeframe, which may be attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic. Government spending also showed an upward trend, resembling closely to HFCE.
